Precautions for Using High-Strength Nuts
2025-11-07 08:48:46

High-strength nuts are widely used due to their simple connection structure, good mechanical performance during use, reusability, fatigue resistance, and their ability to prevent loosening under dynamic loads. In fact, high-strength nuts come in two types: friction-type and bearing-type.

Do not assume that because high-strength nuts are manufactured through special processes and have good product performance, they do not require corrosion and rust prevention. In reality, they must undergo proper anti-corrosion and anti-rust treatment. We must pay attention to these measures in order to extend their service life. Let's discuss some factors that can cause corrosion and rust.

  1. In polluted air (such as environments containing large amounts of sulfides, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides), condensation forms sulfuric, nitric, and acetic acids, which lead to chemical corrosion.

  2. When organic residues (such as fruit juice, vegetable residue, noodle soup, phlegm, etc.) adhere to the surface of stainless steel screws, organic acids may form in the presence of water and oxygen. Over time, these organic acids will corrode the metal surface.

  3. When dust or foreign metal particles adhere to the surface, moisture in the air may cause these contaminants and the stainless steel to form micro-electrochemical cells, resulting in electrochemical reactions that damage the protective film. This is known as electrochemical corrosion.

  4. If the surface of stainless steel adheres to substances containing acids, alkalis, or salts (such as alkaline water or lime water splashed on walls during construction), localized corrosion may occur.

In addition to corrosion and rust prevention, the friction coefficient has a significant impact on the load-bearing performance of high-strength nut connections. Experimental data shows that the main factors affecting the friction coefficient are the condition of the contact surface and the material of the components. To increase the friction coefficient of the contact surface, it is common to treat the contact areas of the components by sandblasting or brushing with a steel wire brush to ensure proper surface roughness and cleanliness.
